Assessing and mitigating risk from is an ongoing challenge for every carrier and becomes even more critical with the rising cost of insurance coverage and the trends with lawsuits.  Join this panel of carriers and insurance providers to gain insights on risk mitigation and delve into what the insurance companies are looking for and why.  This panel will also discuss the impact of right sizing your business presence in the upcoming weeks and months. Strategies for right sizing fleets, the need for a solid job setup for flatbed and the trends for business sector re-emergence will also be addressed.

Jeff Davis

Vice President of Safety, Napa River Insurance Services, Inc.
Jeff Davis has been involved in commercial trucking safety from the insurance side since 1983. As Vice President of Safety for Hudson Insurance Group/Napa River Insurance Services, Jeff oversees all safety and loss prevention activities with prospective and insured clients. This includes the pre-underwriting due diligence process, insured client safety and compliance services, as well as analyzing loss and compliance data.Jeff is active in numerous state and national trucking industry groups. He is also a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Professional Truck Driver Institute. Jeff is also a member of the Truckload Carriers Association Regulatory Policy Committee. He was the 2018 recipient of the Lee J. Crittenden Award presented by the Professional Truck Driver Institute.Jeff received his B.S. in Public Administration and Regulatory Affairs from Indiana University, School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Jeff Hopkins

Vice President of Safety, Training, and Risk Management, Boyd Bros. Transportation, Inc.
Jeffrey Hopkins is currently the Vice President of Safety, Training, and Risk Management for Boyd Bros Transportation, a Daseke company. Jeff has been with Boyd Bros for 24 years, working in the operations, safety, and training areas. During his career, Jeff has worked in dispatch, customer service, training and development, human resources, operations and safety.  Jeff also leverages his military experience in his civilian career, having retired as a Colonel with 24 years in the Army Reserve, with multiple tours in Iraq. He has a bachelor’s degree in History from UAB, and a Masters of Strategic Studies from the Army War College. Jeff currently resides with his son, James, near Eufaula, Alabama.  

John Simms

Senior Risk Advisor, HNI
John is a senior level risk management professional with more than 40 years of experience in the transportation industry.  John leads the HNI Risk Services Advisory Team in our IL Office.  John and his team specialize in advancing company cultures which has a large impact on risk management, loss prevention, safety and compliance.  John has a wealth of experience and passion for working to help clients establish proper processes, procedures, measurements and strategic initiatives that will enable them to work towards continuous improvement in loss reduction, resulting in reduced risk exposure and increased profitability for their organization.

Milton Van Horn, CDS

Director of Safety, Carrier One, Inc.
Prior to becoming a member of the trucking industry, Milton spent 21 years in the United States Air Force, retiring at the rank of Senior Master Sargent.  Upon retirement from the military, Milton entered the trucking industry as an over-the-road flatbed driver for Falcon Transport Co. out of Youngstown Oh.  There he served in the position as a flatbed truck driver for 16 years accumulating over 2.5 million accident free miles as well has never being cited for any violations during roadside inspections.  In the year 2000, Falcon Transport honored Milton with their highest honor when he was named 2000 Safest Driver of the Year.  In 2007 he was promoted into the position as Director of Safety and served in that position as their Chief Safety Officer for 11 plus years except for two brief stints in operations at Republic Services.  In 2018 Milton joined Carrier One as their Director of Safety making immediate impacts which resulted in Milton being name the 2019 IL Trucking Association “Safety Professional of the Year!  Milton is a Certified Director of Safety and in his free time helps his wife raise 2 incredible great grandkids!
